New Technology

Are there new technologies or material changes that transform businesses’ or companies’ expectations and the way they interact? Have you had any experience with a business or company that introduced new technical systems to do things? What other kinds of changes did they stimulate? How did people react differently?
Michael Hooker wrote an interesting article called, “The Transformation of Higher Education,” he explains that education is changing because of technology and of two forces one of which is cyclical and the other which is structural and both are changing the future of education in high speed ways. He states, “One force is the information revolution, which is driving the shift from an energy-based to a knowledge-based economy. The other is the management revolution, which itself is being driven partly by changes in our capacity to use information” (Hooker, 2012). People today expect to get answers quickly and with the use of technology we get to be together as a class but live very far from each other. Even people who go to the school and live in the same state may never meet each other just because of the fact that we set certain relationship boundaries, that may seem strange if one was to meet another. I know someone who lives about two hours from me who I met at Ashford, she is really nice and is probably done with her master’s program and we chatted all through class, but I am not going to meet her. It makes the relationship different and may be uncomfortable if you drive for two hours and not have anything else in common, what do you think?
Answers to questions can be posted very quickly, reviewing our work before we send it only takes a quick tap on your mouse to check spelling and then moments after that you can pass in your work. When things like errors come up people get frustrated when we cannot get through and for some reason I try over and over again and still get the same error and when that happens I feel nervous. On Monday I could not log in after 5:30 PM, I had passed in my paper during the day and had finished my responses so I knew I had done enough work for the week, it was just disappointing that I could not show up for the last class. Multiple classes are given at the same time to people all over the United States (and a few out) and we can be learning the same things as hundreds of others at the same time without evening realizing it. I believe one of the reasons why my admissions advisor calls me every couple of weeks is that she wants to make sure I am OK and that if I am not she can be a source for help. Has anyone had several calls from people in admissions to be there for support?
When I worked at AT&T we had a timekeeping, scheduling system called Work Force Management it was hard for us to get used to doing and it felt like the managers were watching our every move. This job was great and people were nice so we felt micro-managed at first but we liked our jobs so it became the norm and we had to follow the rules, if we were late for a break we would email our manager and then we would not be in trouble. It felt normal, my boss was nice and he did not hound me too much and he told me to be aware of things he noticed as far as clocking in and out.
Susan Campbell states that, “Monet Software blog offers call center management three ways to simplify call center scheduling, including focusing on a more accurate forecast, involving your agents in the process and automating repetitive tasks. By closely focusing on these simple elements, call center management can make their jobs and the operation of their centers a bit easier”.  So in reality what happens with this type of technology managers can do many things, set schedules for people when there is an expected call volume, like last Monday was busy and with Passports being needed for winter travelers so we must be ready to man the phones. I worked at The Passport Information Center and we had a flip sheet that posted how many calls we would get in one day. We would also know the peak times for calls, they would schedule meetings during the slower parts of the day and we could see when our friends were taking their breaks because we would get a big spreadsheet with each employees listed on it.

Causes and Consequences

Causes and Consequences
Unemployment and social services
Today’s unemployment rate is so high that in NH they are having a huge layoff within Employment Securities, they are the people who are in charge of motivating people through training to get back to work, they are also the same people who are in charge of handing out unemployment to residents in the state of NH. Ted Siefer a writer for The Union Leader writes about job loss in an unsuspecting place, “The New Hampshire Department of Employment Security is laying off 53 full-time and 19 part-time workers” (Siefer, 2011). One of those workers happened to be a counselor I met with each month who I met with to go over potential job searches with and sometimes he would put me on hold  for benefits if he thought I was unable to work. I was in a car accident at the end of August and it was very scary because I was on the highway and something flew off a tow truck and I had run it over. I was lucky a police officer was watching traffic and he was able to help me but I am still recovering from the effects of my accident. I see a chiropractor a few times a week, go to acupuncture and I just started psychical therapy and I decided to go to school when someone from the admissions office called and told me, “There was grant money for me”. I still have to look for work and having the pressure of being in the “profiling program” was something I worried about all the time. This effects me because now I feel like the worry is gone but my counselor lost his job and now he has to collect unemployment, do you see a certain irony there?
The reason for the layoff is a strange one, but that is the state of NH for you, “The good news is we have one third of the claims we had 18 months ago. The bad news is, with claims being lower, our base funding disappears," Reardon said. "We receive no state funding. Our federal funding is absolutely contingent on whatever the claim cycle is” (Siefer, 2011). So because the employment rate has gone down there is less funding for the rest of us who are looking for jobs. “There are 11,000 current unemployment claims in New Hampshire, down from 39,000 in March 2010” (Siefer, 2011).
Some people are out of work for many reasons my case is a little different, I took a stressful job in the finance industry and survived for 5 ½ months and then they let me go. I am so thankful that I am no longer there and it was not a good fit for me. I tried really hard and stayed longer hours to make sure I had a higher productivity level, when I noticed there were steps I could take to make it higher. I worked at a call center and we had a 30 minute break and for the rest of the time we had to be on the phones, even if I was helping someone off the phones by processing paperwork or making calls out my productivity went down. So I fall into the category where people take jobs that don’t fit for one reason or another and loose them. In 2009 my company closed due to a loss of contract with Department of State, I loved the job and I miss working there it was a different type of call center environment  but the work was good and people were nice to each other and that makes a big difference. I went back to school and got my Bachelors in Communication and in January of 2011, I went in fearless to John Hancock in the mutual funds department because I knew I could learn anything. What I learned is that trainers need to be aware that adults learn differently and you cannot train them all the same way and that a positive environment and open communication makes a big difference with interpersonal relationships with managers.
I found a really interesting point on a website called The American Thinker and although I share a different political affliction then the writer what he has to say is really great and gets to the point of unemployment and social factors involved with it.  “Long term unemployment makes the chance of landing a job that much harder -- and a myriad of other problems emerge: family breakdown, loss of homes, increased credit problems, more reliance on food stamps (also at a record high), loss of morale and the corroding of the human spirit” (Lasky, 2011). Since I have had periods on unemployment in the last few years I have really become more savvy when it comes to looking for help with basic bills, Unitil (heat), PSNH (electricity) give people a break when it comes to paying those bills, an application is necessary but it is totally worth it. Unitil will provide a credit for those who have been paying their bill but for something such a job loss, accident or whatever the case people will receive help. Last year it was easy to get a discount for PSNH you just had to show proof of income and then 70% would be taken off your account. Since there was a high fraud rate in the State of NH there are other factors to be taken into consideration which makes it harder to get, and I do not qualify because I get assistance from my parents and that is considered income.
There are other services that I take advantage of such as a free medication program called Bridges to Access and I get medicine free which would normally be over $1,000 dollars for a three months supply, I have epilepsy so it is a given that I will need the medication. The recent change to that service is a ten dollar administrative fee that which is really not a big deal and I feel lucky that my neurologist suggested the program to me, what they do is negotiate with the big drug companies and then aid is provided for people who cannot afford health insurance. Here is the link just in case anyone wants to take advantage of it.  http://www.bridgestoaccess.com/
So the next service that a lot of people need to use is Food Stamps, I have only been on it one month because my dad went over to the Human Services office and made me fill out paperwork. Although he helps me out with bills for medical from my accident he gets really stressed out about money so I went ahead and applied. Going to the human services office felt very strange, people looked strange and I knew that some of those people did not have the resources to pull themselves out of their own way. Some people there have been down for so long that they cannot get back up. The room was full of people that really needed help and I think the support for them in general is very low, some people where actually turned away because they did not have an appointment. I sent mine application off to the main office in Concord, NH and they sent me an appointment by mail. Boy, did I ever learn so much about the system as I did within 15 that was about how long my appointment was. I looked into getting disability and realized that was not for me, the accident caused me short-term health problems and I have resources to keep me afloat. If you apply for disability a red flag will go to social security and then they will contact unemployment and you have to prove you will be unable of working for four years. So this is even before getin approved, I continue to look for work and file for unemployment every Sunday and I have to put four jobs I applied to in each week. Craigslist is the best site around because local company’s list jobs without having to pay for advertising and a variety of administrative jobs that would fit me are listed. The only problem is about 200 hundred other job seekers are looking for work and the employer can only bring so many people in to interview, such as the case with a chiropractor I interviewed with. How awkward is it to have your competition in the same room?
For this assignment it was easier to use personal experiences rather than to come up with a specific event, these are events that happen in millions of Americans lives each day and there are so many layers of events that happen it just feels like a cyclical loop. Social scientists may be able to look at unemployment and social services on many different levels but probably they would be more likely to use a specific technique or take a particular angle to promote whatever idea or intention they may have to make their point. That depends on who the audience is as well, is it a report for a collogue or someone in the academic field, will the information be provided at a conference, lecture or a meeting with political leaders it all depends on their goals and who they want to share the information with. Such as the authors of the book, they could have gone more in depth on each of the theories but they decided that would not be helpful in getting to a variety of their points instead of just a few. Each topic in the first 64 pages probably has it owns forum, thesis papers, books in details that describe each one in an academic way. “We want to focus here on different types of explanations of change, that is, on the theories of change, rather than on theorists” (Harper & Leicht pg. 15) .

Innovation and Entrepreneurship
First Week Written Assignment

Abstract
“An entrepreneur is an individual who owns a firm, business, or venture, and is responsible for its development. Entrepreneurship is the practice of starting a new business or reviving an existing business, in order to capitalize on new found opportunities,” (Shukla, 2009). People who start their own businesses tend to feel safer than if they worked for someone else because some people are really tough to work for and in an economy that is experiencing a slow growth sometimes being an entrepreneur is done for survival along with the excitement of being a boss and not having to report to one.
What’s Your Path?
“Entrepreneurs are a different set of people. They often see things that others fail to notice. They endeavor to bring about change and foster growth. They believe in themselves. Entrepreneurship propels them to strive and move forward, to get to where they want to be” (Shukla, 2009). Pranav Bhasin writes about how cycling is just like entrepreneurship, it is interesting to note that before he wrote this article he always would compare how the two were very much alike and then he decided it was time to share his thoughts.  When riding a bike all sorts of great thoughts can pop into your head and especially if writing is a hobby then finding a pen and paper is almost necessary after a great ride. I have actually worked out on one of the machines at the gym while a retired teacher was helping me to come up with that all important first sentences for a big paper I was writing. I was lucky that the gym had their logo on pens and so I was able to jot down a few notes while working out on the elliptical. So inspiration can come in at unexpected moments and Pranav has made up a great list that will help any cyclist want to become an entrepreneur or any entrepreneur who wants to get into cycling.
Starting Out
When starting out for a ride and it is a beautiful day the main goal for any cyclist to get out there and see the sights without having to be in a car because cyclists can easily get in and out of places that cars will be hard pressed to go into. So the goal starts out as wake up, get out of bed put the cycling jersey on and go to your favorite path and get started on having a great day. People who are entrepreneurs wake up with that same feeling because they are in charge of their own destiny or on a smaller scale their day and then the one after that and so on. Pranav feels that, “One fine day, you hear an inner voice calling and you leave everything else and get started. And yes, cyclists and entrepreneurs are eternal optimists and you need all the positive energy you can amass just to get started,” (Bhasin, 2010). So like cycling a feeling on a sunny day when being outside is a must and almost a necessity that will not go away calls one to take on the path to entrepreneurship and that is the feeling that Pranav speaks to “diving in” because others can be influenced to cycle or branch out on their own business journey “but both of these activities require you to overcome a lot of inertia” before getting started (Bhasin, 2010).
Tough at First
“For the first few kilometers of your ride, you enjoy the breeze and the freedom, but soon you start getting tired and you are wondering if you made the right decision,” (Bhasin, 2010). This is the same feeling entrepreneurs get after not getting a pay check after making the big decision to take another path, so like the trails or new riding spots that one may find there is the same feeling for both. People who start off on bike rides with an expected goal or distance know that some of the way will have hills and that waking the bike up them is always an option but taking the slow and steady path will allow one to not have to do that. I really liked this article because he compares the fact that every cyclist should learn how to be independent say if a flat or something unexpected comes flying off your bike (any number of things could happen) just like when one is the entrepreneur they are also the marketer, the owner and the janitor (Bhasin, 2010).
Things May Seem Hard
“I did not ever think that the primary purpose of gears could be to help you save energy, rather than go fast. When you are out for a long ride, your goal is not to get there fast, but to finish the ride,” (Bhasin, 2010). I can tell that Pranav is a cyclist that is just like me and I go out to have a great time and most of the time I ride by myself but I do see speedsters zoom past me and that is O.K. Spending energy while cycling is just like spending money “You need to be very miserly in spending the cash because that is your biggest asset. If you burn your cash too fast, your startup may not live long enough to complete the journey you set it for,” (Bhasin, 2010).
Follow Your Path
So if the path to happiness is down a dirt trail with many slopes, inclines and bridges or if the side of the road on the bike path is the best and the only option than that is up to the rider, and if the path leads to a job that is not 9-5, but one that may become an extension of oneself never ending with one final destination. “All the hard work, all the effort that went into it was properly channeled towards achieving a goal and finally you achieved it. You had to go through numerous hurdles, at several points you were tempted to turn back, but your will power made you go on and on to achieve it,” (Bhasin, 2010). This article was just what I needed to help me write this paper because I spent a long time looking for sources that I could connect and relate to and it took fellow cyclists to get me well on my way and what a great source of inspiration.

Culture

Net Daemons is a company that probably nobody has heard of but it was founded by Jennifer Lawton and she has taken many steps to make her company have an entrepreneurial culture. Some of the steps she has taken may seem simple but once you hear her explanation it sounds really good, for example she has a totally different philosophy about sick time.
“When employees get sick, they miss work, so it makes sense to offer health insurance as a benefit. We covered 100% of employee health plans. I never want an employee to experience a catastrophic illness and not be covered by insurance. We also offered unlimited sick time. While I had seen this type of policy backfire elsewhere, it nonetheless allowed people to be sick when they really were sick, and not feel obligated to gobble up each "allotted" sick day” (Lawton, 2012).
I think this is a great idea because how many people have been sick at home and felt guilty about not being at work? This was one of her ideas as an entrepreneur to make people know that if you are sick you do not have to worry about losing your job because you need a couple of days off.
Lawton also states that “Corporate culture cannot, does not and never will exist "just because." Culture is a balancing act between many elements of a company and requires careful execution at each level” (Lawton, 2012).
*Treat people with respect
*Help employees stay healthy
*Open doors of communication
*Build Camaraderie
She also believes:
*Let the team build itself. Within that safe, comfortable, open environment, let employees grow together without being made to.
*Participate without controlling. Let the culture thrive, without your either meddling with it or ignoring it.
*Don't forget the little things. Culture is made up of many small actions that, when put together, create something larger than the sum of the parts. There are many things a CEO can do to make employees feel a part of the company. Some are just common courtesies: hallway conversations, saying "hello" in the morning, opening doors, asking after people's families and partners.
This sounds like a great type of company to work for as I was reading her article it makes me hopeful that I will find a good place to work, it is all about respect and trust and if you do not have either than your one foot out the door.

New Phone

Here are two quotes I found to help define what creative destruction is, with the changing world we must grow and it will allow people to use new technology, everybody likes new cell phones but what happens to the old one that still works?
Joseph Schumpeter, "coined the term "creative destruction" to describe this process of the old being constantly replaced by the new. In fact, he viewed the economy as somewhat like a living organism, constantly growing and changing to maintain its health. He warned that capitalism holds the seeds of its own destruction, and that government control over the economy carries the danger of out of control inflation and economic disaster, both due to the self-centered nature of human beings” (New World Encyclopedia, 2012).
“Part of the core logic of creative destruction is that attempts by current organizations to improve current methods of production are doomed--innovation must create technologies, new processes, and new products and services” (Hyde, 2001).
The other day I got a letter from AT&T saying that I need to turn in my 2G phone or else I could lose service and they sent me a voucher with four different types of phone styles listed. At first I was in disbelief that I would get something for free with no strings attached but I took my old phone into the store and found out all the 2G towers where being taken down.
My phone was simple, I just used it to make calls and after speaking with the sales associate I realized I was on a more expensive plan and I could add texting and unlimited internet for $10 on a cheaper one. So now I am on a better plan because I cut my minutes in half. I have been enjoying this new technology more than I would have ever thought, this phone has a flat screen and I can easily send a text message, find out what time it is and I had fun picking out a really cool piano ring tone.

I am on a better plan and I realized that AT&T designed these four phones so that people would be excited about the change instead of feeling upset that they had to give up their old phones. I see why people get excited with new technology but what happens to the old ones that still work? I had to turn my old phone in and the sales associate downloaded my contact list and I got a cool cover for my phone and I ended up only spending $17. What do people do with their old battery chargers? I now have two that I will never use again because of the change in technology I have hung onto things that have past its time and sometimes I laugh and think I really need to pitch it.
I believe people who are skilled workers in the technology field will have a pretty good chance of getting another job because their skill set is something that a lot of people will not even begin to understand. People who have an open mind will see that change and innovation is inevitable and that person will have new doors that will be open to them for employment possibilities.
I love my new phone it has a really cool design, so thank you to the engineers who designed it.

Going Gummy

So this morning I was trying to figure out something that would fall under a new innovation in the last five years and I thought of something really great we can now get vitamins in a gummy form and the ones I buy taste really good. I have never been able to swallow anything so I have always had to look to liquid herbs, chewable vitamins, homeopathic remedies which dissolve in your mouth very quickly and at my local herbal pharmacy I was introduced to two different types of vitamins.
The first is a multi dietary supplement put out by the Slice Of Life Company and it is filled with high quality ingredients with about ten different ingredients, it is gluten, yeast, wheat, dairy, milk, salt and peanut free. So this product can be taken by people who need a gluten free diet and people who have this condition have a hard time finding foods that do not upset their stomachs or make them feel really ill.

This product on so many levels is very innovative and I no longer have to hope that my chewable vitamins taste good or that I will have a weird after taste in my mouth. Another innovative aspect is that you can go online and purchase this product and have it sent right to your home. The cost of Slice of Life Multi-vitamin online is $21.99 there is a charge for shipping (which I could not find) I think they may add that at the end after you have decided to order.

This product is sold at the herbal pharmacy near me for the same amount so I am not going to buy it online and pay for shipping no deal can be found here, but I wonder if I do a little shopping around if I will find it cheaper elsewhere.  What also happens it is that I can start out at SliceofLife.com and when I am ready to purchase I end up on another website called Heronurtionals.com so it is interesting to see that there are some sort of special agreements between the two companies. Some people may never know the difference and just be excited about ordering their vitamins and wanting to make it to the checkout without going overboard with purchases.
http://heronutritionals.com/vitamins.jsp?productid=13
The next vitamin that I have been taking for years is Vitamin D 1000 IU called Sunny Gummies and it is put out by Rainbow Light and this taste very good also. So I have a very colorful selection of healthy vitamins that taste good in the morning and I can say it is a big change from the types of vitamins I would take five years ago. Now when I looked to purchase the Sunny Gummies I ended up at a website called drugstore.com and interestingly enough they had a $2 coupon and they charge $5.99 for shipping which would bring the product to a little under $14. I can get this product for $15.99 and I do not have to pay for shipping and I think with a little more investigation I could possibly find this product at a lower price.
http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=199120&trx=19983
I enjoy going to my local herbal pharmacy because I know a lot of the people there, they will put special orders for me in and also once I reach the $500 for the year in purchases I will get $10 to use toward my next purchase and I receive a discount on every purchase I make.

Welcome to my blog! This is the work I have completed while at Ashford University and I am excited that you have taken time to look at my website.
